Level 5 Diploma Education and Training


This Diploma qualification in the QCF is recognised as equivalent to the Certificate of Education qualifications in the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ). Learners who have achieved the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (QCF) can progress to further studies in education, such as the Pearson Edexcel Level 7 Diploma in Assessment Management (QCF). Learners who achieve the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training courses (QCF) and who are progressing to higher education accredited qualifications at Level 6 or above can have their Level 5 credit recognised in line with the higher education institution’s arrangements for the recognition of prior learning.

Learners will display:

  • Knowledge of theories and principles for inclusive learning and teaching
  • Knowledge and critical understanding of strategies and support communication for assessing and meeting individual learning needs
  • Understanding of the concept and use of initial and diagnostic assessment
  • Knowledge of roles and responsibilities and relationship in education and training
  • Appreciate the importance of delivering the minimum core effectively
  • The ability to investigate good practice in own subject area
  • Understand how to use study skills techniques to enhance the student experience
  • Be able to develop specialist delivery techniques
  • Be able to promote positive behaviour
  • Develop personal growth and engagement in learning
  • Ability to learn reflectively, develop skills and understand the limits of own knowledge
  • Ability to complete investigations and effectively communicate results

Teaching Practice

Teaching practice is integral to the entire programme and through this, students will demonstrate their own understanding of the principles of teaching and learning. Through the teaching practice, trainee teachers will demonstrate their ability to plan and deliver lessons and assess their students.

Trainee teachers will have to evidence 100 teaching practice hours. They will be observed for a minimum of eight hours over a minimum of eight occasions where mentors or tutors will provide constructive feedback which will further their development as teachers.

Teaching practice will involve the following:

  • A number of teaching practice locations/settings/contexts
  • Teaching across more than one level
  • Teaching a variety of learners
  • Teaching individuals and groups
  • Experience in non-teaching roles
  • Gaining subject specialist knowledge through workplace mentoring.

Entry Requirements

Learners who wish to undertake the Diploma in Education and Teaching programme should have:

  • A degree or a relevant vocational and/or academic qualification.
  • A keen interest in teaching and learning
  • A current DBS Check/Certificate - should not have a criminal background, which might prevent them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults
  • GCSE’s in Maths and English grade 4 or grade C. Alternative equivalent level 2 qualifications may be accepted such as Functional Skills level 2 Pass
